“Should I Leave My Church?” Questions to Ask Oneself before Leaving a Church, from Dr. Gregg Allison

Dr. Gregg Allison, professor of Christian Theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has written a book on the doctrine of the church to be published in the near future.  Among the many helpful things in this volume is a list of questions one can use to determine whether or not to leave one’s church. In a day in which “church shopping” is all too common, and people frequently leave churches because their “needs just aren’t being met,” or they just don’t feel like they are “being fed,” these questions are very helpful.  I encourage you to get the book when it comes out.

Here are the questions:

  • Have I expended all of my opportunities to effect change in this church?
  • Will continued participation in this church exert a negative impact on my relationship with and worship of God, my ministry for Jesus Christ, the use of my spiritual gifts, etc.?
  • Do I have to compromise too much—essential doctrines and practices, a lifestyle in accordance with biblical values and principles—in order to remain in this church?
  • Do I have a legitimate reason for leaving?
