Jesus tells us not to lay up treasure on earth but rather to lay it up in heaven (Matthew 6:19-20). On the face of it this might seem inconsistent with examples from the Old Testament where it seems that the accumulation of earthly treasure is a good thing. Why was it okay for Solomon, for instance, to store up massive amounts of gold and other earthly treasures (see 2 Chronicles 9:13-28), and yet Jesus tells us that it’s not okay for Christians to do this? Will there ever be a time when believers will accumulate treasure on earth?
